Don't Be Ridiculous

In a decade where a book like The DaVinci Code can get people buzzing in airports, on beaches, and in classrooms all across the country, how can it be that the culture of the book is coming to an end? Say what you will about the quality of the culture; that culture is still there. Books are no more falling victim to other aspects of culture than the movie theater fell victim to the rise of television.

I'm turning sociological here . . . I wonder what data there might be as to how many books are being published, in what quantities? ("I" am freeloading on Claire's account.)

It's a good point. Another aspect is WHO is being published? Aside from the bestselling authors, what room is there in the publishing world? And who is reading these books? Besides us, that is...

I'd agree with Ruth, especially when I see all of those subway readers ever more entrenched in reading to avoid human contact. And Claire, I think the forms of publication (on-line, audio, hardcopy) would be interesting as well.
